Hydro Jetting Notes

WHY YOUR DRAIN CLOGS AGAIN AFTER SNAKING

A cable punches a hole through a clog and leaves the grease on the pipe wall. Why the line narrows back down, and how to tell when it is time to jet instead.

You paid for a drain to be snaked, the water ran free, and then three or four weeks later the sink is slow again. It feels like you were sold a bad job. Usually you were not. A cable does exactly what it is built to do, but what it is built to do and what you actually needed are not always the same thing.

What a Snake Actually Does

A drain cable has a spinning head, a hook or a blade, that bores through or snags whatever is blocking the pipe. It is excellent at one job: opening a path through an obstruction. A hair clump in a tub, a wad of paper in a toilet line, a handful of wipes at a bend. For that kind of one-object clog it is the right, cheaper tool. Branch-line snake runs are $175 to $325, kitchen drains $150 to $275 and a clogged toilet auger job $125 to $225.

What a cable does not do is clean the pipe. It leaves a channel the width of the cable head through the middle of the buildup. The grease, soap scum and scale that lined the wall before are still there, minus a hole.

Why It Narrows Again

Think of a pipe with a thick ring of plaque on its inner wall. The cable cuts a hole through the middle. Water flows, and for a while everything looks fine. But the coating is still catching what comes down next. Grease cools and adds to the ring. Soap and hair stick. The channel shrinks until the first wad of anything catches and you are back to a standing drain.

How fast depends on what you put down it. A kitchen line that gets cooking fat every night can slow in weeks. A hall bathroom sink that sees toothpaste and water might stay clear for years.

Here is the arithmetic, using a made-up but plausible case. A kitchen drain that needs a $150 to $275 snake run every two months costs somewhere between $900 and $1,650 over a year, and the sink is never really clear. One kitchen line jetting at $275 to $450 that removes the coating can cost less than the second or third snake call, provided the habits that built the coating change.

Signs the first clog was just the visible tip

  • The same fixture slows down again inside two months.
  • The cable came back coated in grease or sludge, not a single object.
  • Water drains but gurgles, or drains slowly even when the stopper is out.
  • Other fixtures on the same branch are also a bit sluggish.

Snaking or Jetting: A Quick Decision Table

Standard residential hydro jetting runs $350 to $650. It costs more than a snake run on the first visit, but if the snake has to come back every couple of months, the totals move closer. The hydro jetting cost guide works through that comparison.

What Jetting Does Differently

A jetter sends high-pressure water through a hose with a nozzle that fires jets backward as well as forward. The forward jets open the clog. The rear jets scour the pipe wall and push the hose along while washing the loosened material toward the exit. The aim is bare pipe instead of a tunnel through plaque. Read about the method on our hydro jetting services page, and see what the pressure and flow numbers mean if you want the details.

Jetting has limits. It does not repair a cracked or sagging pipe, it will not stop a new clog from forming if the habits behind it do not change, and it is not suitable for very fragile pipe. The camera is the check. If you need plain drain cleaning and snaking for a single stopped fixture, that is still the right tool and we will say so.

How to Stretch the Time Between Cleanings

  1. Scrape cooking fat into the trash instead of the sink.
  2. Use a hair catcher in each tub and shower.
  3. Flush only toilet paper.
  4. Run hot water for half a minute after dishes, which helps but does not replace the first three steps.

If a drain has clogged twice in a short window, a camera look is cheaper than a third snake run. It shows whether you have a coated line, a sag that holds water, or a joint that is catching things. You can see how that visit is structured in what to expect from a hydro jetting visit.

Repeat Clog FAQs

A cable opens a channel through the blockage but leaves the grease, scale or soap film on the pipe wall. That coating keeps catching debris, so the opening narrows again. A jetter removes the film as well as the clog.

It varies with what goes down the line. A bathroom sink may stay clear for years, while a kitchen line carrying cooking fat can slow within weeks. If the same drain clogs twice within a couple of months, jetting is worth considering.

They are for different jobs. A snake is the right, cheaper tool for a one-time obstruction. Jetting is better for repeat clogs, grease buildup and roots because it cleans the pipe wall rather than only opening a hole.

Rarely. Liquid cleaners can make a pipe worse by sitting in standing water, and they will not remove a coating along the full length of a line. A camera and a mechanical clean address the cause.

You can, but a camera is the way to tell a coated pipe from a sag or a broken section. It runs $150 to $300 and is often credited toward the work the same visit.
